About Us

Smt. Anitha Guha, one of the most popular Bharathanatyam teachers of Chennai, had her initial exposure to this art form from her mother,Smt.Karthiyayini Natesan and later underwent training under Guru. Sri. Govindarajan Pillai. She also had the fortune of being under the guidance of Kalaimamani. Sri. Radha Krishnan and Dr. Ananda Shankar Jayanth, for a very brief period.She learns carnatic music from Smt.B. Meenakshi who specializes in Oothukadu compositions.
Smt. Anitha Guha, although a non performing artist now, possesses a god’s gift of grace, elegance, natural talent for choreography and love for dance dramas and has staged a variety of‘NrityaNatakams’ with her dance group in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, from a very tender age. She played title roles like Radha, Valli, Mohini, Basmasura, Shiva, Urvasi with such finesse that the audiences marveled at her portrayal. Her adept portrayal of Urvasi won her the Minister’s Award in 1985.
Anitha founded Bharathanjali in the year 1989. Since then, she has been imparting to her students with love and dedication whatever has been bestowed upon her by the almighty. She is blessed with a wonderful talent of teaching Bharathanatyam to youngsters, and has the uncanny ability to bring out the best in each and every student. She has pioneered in moulding children of very early age to professional standards.
Many of her students have blossomed into solo performers and teachers who have been performing in India and abroad, winning awards, titles and scholarships.Appreciated by the critics and the rasikas as the foremost ballet producer of her generation, she has carved a niche for herself with several, much lauded Mythological NrityaNatakams and Thematic dance productions which have been performed in many prestigious sabhas all over India. A cast of young students with fine dancing technique, a dramatic\ atmosphere and remarkable choreography have made her productions unique and inspiring to one and all. She now has around 25 Nrithya Natakams to her credit.
In 2011, she had the prestigious opportunity of working with the great musicians, choreographing and presenting the ‘Kishkindha Kandam’ and ‘Sundara Kandam’ in the Ramayana series along with many senior gurus for the Cleveland Aradhana festival. She presented the ‘Vana Virata Vijayam’ from the Mahabharatha for the same festival in 2014.
The school celebrated its silver jubilee as a three day festival in 2015 with cultural programmes and honoured many veterans in the art field.In 2017 she presented KRISHNAVATHARAM ON INAUGRAL DAY OF the BHAGAVATHAM SERIES Presented for CLEVELAND ARADHANA.In 2018 she had the opportunity to present Nandalala across 14 cities in the US FOR AIM FOR SEVA for their fund raising.

Smt. Jayashree Ramanathan

Jayashree is an accomplished Bharathanatyam artiste with talents in dance, Nattuvangam, and vocal support. She began her training at nine under Smt. Sudharani Raghupathy at Bharathalaya and further honed her skills for a decade with the Dhananjayans at Bharathakalanjali. She taught at ‘The School’ run by the J. Krishnamurthy Foundation in Chennai and collaborated with Prof. Chandrasekar of M.S. University Baroda. Jayashree has accompanied renowned artistes like Smt. Vyjyanthimala Bali and the Dhananjayans throughout the USA and has performed in Europe, Singapore, and Myanmar. Currently, she is a senior faculty member at Bharathakalanjali, providing dance lessons and Nattuvangam support to students.

Nalina Madhivanan

One of the senior faculty members at Bharathanjali holds a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A) from Kalaikaveri University and earned her Bachelor of Performing Arts (B.P.A) with distinction from Pondicherry University. She also holds a diploma in dance from Bharathiyar Palkalaikoodam, Pondicherry. With seven years of teaching experience at 'Sathyasai Natyalaya,' she now manages the junior classes at Bharathanjali and teaches dance theory. Her extensive training and academic achievements contribute significantly to her role in nurturing the next generation of dancers.

Saswatha Aishwarya.V

One of the senior-most disciples of Smt. Anitha Guha, Saswatha is a passionate artist known for her excellence in abhinaya and histrionics, with numerous solo performances and participation in her Guru's productions. As a dedicated faculty member at Bharathanjali, she teaches young students and plays a significant role in assisting her Guru with training for arangetrams. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Saswatha holds a degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering and works part-time as a Tamil teacher at Patasala Montessori School.

Vandana

Vandana began her Bharatanatyam training at age seven under Smt. Jayalakshmi Arunachalam Pillai, mastering the Thanjavur style over 15 years and earning titles like ``Natya Bala`` and ``Natya Chudhar.`` She has performed on major TV channels, won various competitions, and joined Smt. Anitha Guha in 2006 to further refine her skills. Vandana has danced across India and Bali, Indonesia, and her portrayal as Garuda Vahanam in ``Pada Kavitha Pita Maha`` was widely acclaimed. She also holds a Master's degree in Bharatanatyam and is a certified yoga instructor at Bharathanjali.

Smrithi Krishnamoorthy

A Chartered Accountant by qualification and Bharatanatyam artist by profession, Smrithi hails from a lineage of musicians and academicians. Initiated into Bharatanatyam in Muscat by her aunt, Kala Srinivasan, a disciple of Kalakshetra, she moved to India in 2006 to join Guru Smt. Anitha Guha, with whom she has trained ever since. Since 2009, Smrithi has assisted her guru and now handles senior classes. Her exposure to ``Nrithya Natakam`` and Margams under her guru's guidance has enriched her with a vast knowledge of the art form.

A Bharatanatyam exponent, choreographer, and dance teacher, she is an alumna of Kalakshetra and holds a Master's degree in Fine Arts from Annamalai University. As a faculty member at Bharathanjali, she has played a key role in training students. Her passion extends beyond teaching to research in dance, with a focus on ancient Indian texts and Nattuvangam. Her deep knowledge and commitment to the art form contribute significantly to her role in nurturing the next generation of Bharatanatyam dancers.
